The rosette-forming thallus of this lichen is 3-10(-20) cm wide with rounded lobes. The upper surface is wrinkled and pitted, with granular soredia and is colored olive- or yellow- brown to grey-black when dry, becoming greenish-, bluish-, or reddish-brown when wet. White maculae can be seen on the upper surface with a 10x lens. The medulla is white, and this lichen contains Nostoc as a photobiont. The lower surface is a light creamy tan color at margins that lack tomentum, and brown or black tomentose in other areas. The lower surface also has conspicuous white pseudocyphellae (Galloway, 1992; Galloway & Arvidsson, 1990).
