New Ireland: 2, 4. — General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Tuamotu Archipelago, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to northern New Zealand, Lord Howe and Rapa islands, straying to Hawaiian Islands. Found in lagoon and semisheltered seaward reefs; juveniles often among Acropora corals, 0 – 280 m depth. Marine.
